OUR STORY
The Maker
Andrew McDonaldAndrew McDonald Shoemakers defines premium Australian craftsmanship for discerning men and women who require footwear that balances heritage skill, modern design, and uncompromising fit. Unlike mass-produced luxury or heritage imports, Andrew McDonald offers a direct maker-client relationship, fusing artisanal expertise with contemporary lifestyle needs.
Nestled within the historic Strand Arcade, Andrew McDonald Shoemaker stands as a testament to the enduring art of bespoke footwear. With nearly three decades in the craft, McDonald approaches shoemaking with the precision of a sculptor and the eye of a storyteller.
His path was not conventional. A lens once trained on photography soon pivoted to the tactile artistry of bespoke leatherwork — a transition that gave him an eye for form and surface that most shoemakers never develop.
The Training
Churchill Fellowship, 1996A Churchill Fellowship in 1996 took Andrew across continents, training under master artisans in Britain and France. He absorbed old-world techniques — pattern-making, hand-lasting, channel stitching, finishing — that have not fundamentally changed in centuries, and that now inform every silhouette that leaves the workshop.
The techniques are old. The application is entirely his own.
The Place
Strand Arcade, SydneyThe Strand Arcade — Victorian-era architecture, leadlight ceilings, timber galleries — provides the fitting backdrop for Andrew's work. The Arcade's character lies in its blend of heritage and contemporary life, much like Andrew's approach to the shoe itself: rooted in tradition, resolved for now.
The Ready-to-Wear range brings the standard of bespoke shoemaking to a wider clientele, while still prioritising fit, durability, and individuality. Every stitch, every patina, every perfectly balanced arch is designed with a singular purpose — to embody the essence of the wearer.
The Work
Film, Commission & CraftAndrew's expertise extends well beyond personal commissions. His work has appeared on the sets of major international film productions — most notably, he designed and crafted boots for iconic characters in the Star Wars trilogy and Superman Returns. These projects demonstrated his ability to merge functionality with artistry at a scale where both must perform without compromise.
The philosophy that runs through every commission, every ready-to-wear style, and every film piece is the same: a shoe should reflect the individual who wears it. Not an accessory — a statement of how one moves through the world.
