leather guide
To make high-quality shoes, you need to understand high-quality materials. The majority of our business shoes are made with Italian calf, whilst the made-to-order shoes and boots employ unique leathers and experimental surface finish techniques.
Horse Culatta
is a highly specialised, premium, vegetable-tanned leather derived from the hindquarters (butt) of a horse, specifically prized in the luxury, avant-garde, and bespoke footwear industries. It is often described as a "bridge" between shell cordovan and traditional horsehide, offering a unique, rugged, and highly textured.
Source and Anatomy
- Origin: Cut from the rear section of the horsehide, located just above the shell cordovan layer.
- Characteristics: It represents a, "raw, powerful statement piece" that includes both the dense, fibrous, non-creasing shell and the softer, fibrous leather around it.
- Anatomical Uniqueness: Because shell cordovan only exists in the hindquarters of horses, true culatta is exclusive to equine animals.
Physical Properties
- Texture and Appearance: Culatta is renowned for its chaotic, irregular, and "imperfect" aesthetic. It features a combination of textures, including areas of smooth/glazed shell, raw, fuzzy suede (the reverse/flesh side), and natural scars or wrinkles.
- Durability and Thickness: The leather is exceptionally durable with a dense fibre structure. Thickness generally ranges around 1.4 mm to 2.4 mm (3.5–6 oz), making it suitable for durable boots and shoes.
- Temper: It has a soft, "gummy" and slightly stretchy feel despite its durability, which makes it conform to the foot well.
- Oily Content: It has a high natural oil content, leading to a "pull-up" effect (lighter colours when folded) and excellent burnishing capabilities.
Footwear Applications and Characteristics
- Reverse/Flesh Side Usage: Often, the "reverse" or flesh side is used as the face side in high-end boots and shoes. This side often shows residual traces of shell cordovan bleeding onto the fibres, creating a unique look.
- Patina: Due to the high oil content, it develops a deep, lustrous, and sometimes almost metallic patina over time.
- Best Uses: Ideal for high-end boots (e.g., service boots, derby shoes), artisanal leather goods, and designs emphasising a rustic or "distressed" look.
- Flexibility: While sturdy, the leather is very flexible, making it comfortable for daily
Tanning and Manufacturing
- Tannage: Almost exclusively vegetable-tanned, often by artisan tanneries in Tuscany, Italy.
- "Rude" or "Crude" Finishes: Often finished in a "rude" or "natural" state, which means minimal correction and highlighting of natural defects (scars, veins).
- Wax Content: Many versions, such as "white dirty" tanned culatta, are finished with high wax content to give a "lived-in" or "dusted" look that polishes up with wear.

Calf leather
Calf leather (or calfskin) is considered one of the highest-quality, most versatile materials in the footwear industry. Because of the animal's youth, it is prized for its exceptionally fine, tight grain and soft texture, which allows for a superior, long-lasting product.
- Fine Grain and Smoothness: Calfskin has very closely spaced hair pores, resulting in a smooth, uniform surface with little to no visible, coarse texture.
- Softness and Flexibility: It is renowned for being very supple and pliable, offering a comfortable, low-impact break-in period for footwear.
- High-End Durability: Despite being thin and lightweight, the dense, tightly interwoven fibre structure gives it high tensile strength, making it tear-resistant and capable of withstanding significant daily use.
- Superior Polishability: The smooth surface is ideal for achieving a high shine and luster.
- Aging/Patina Development: High-quality, full-grain calf leather ages gracefully, developing a rich, individual patina over time.
-
Breathability: Due to its natural, porous structure, it is highly breathable, preventing excessive moisture buildup.
Calf leather is the preferred choice for high-end, classic footwear because it strikes an ideal balance between elegance, durability, and comfort.
- Dress Shoes (Oxfords/Derbies): The fine, consistent appearance makes it the "benchmark" material for formal and business dress shoes.
- High-End Boots: Used extensively in premium, slim-profile boots, such as Chelsea or Chukka boots, due to its ability to drape well over the foot.
- Loafers: Often used for loafers because its softness and comfort are ideal for casual, often sockless, styles.

Pebble grained calf/ printed finish leathers
- Pebble grain calf leather, also known as printed, Scotch-grain, or embossed calfskin, is a highly durable and textured material widely used in high-end footwear. It is produced by using heat and pressure to stamp a raised, pebbled pattern onto the surface of calfskin, creating a 3D effect that acts as a natural shield against scratches and abrasions.
Properties Pebble Grain Calf Leather in Footwear:
- Exceptional Durability and Scratch Resistance: The raised, random, and grainy texture makes scratches, scuffs, and creases less visible compared to smooth calf leather. This makes it ideal for daily wear or country-style footwear.
- Rugged yet Refined Aesthetics: It offers a matte to semi-shiny, textured look that provides a "casual, yet stylish" appearance. It is often used for sturdy country boots, brogues, and casual dress shoes.
- Water Resistance: Due to the dense, printed finish and often, a protective top-coat applied during manufacturing, pebble grain leather is generally more water-repellent than untreated smooth leather.
- Flexibility and Comfort: Despite having a rigid, thicker feel, high-quality pebbled calfskin is pliable, allowing it to conform to the foot over time.
- Low Maintenance: The surface does not require frequent polishing to look good, as the texture hides dirt and minor imperfections.
- Shape Retention: The stamping process compresses the fibres, making the leather stiffer and better at retaining its shape over the long term compared to softer leathers.
- Versatility in Style: It acts as a perfect balance between informal and formal, looking equally good with heavy denim or textured suits.

Fine grain calf leathers
-
Fine calf leathers for footwear are premium, high-quality materials derived from the hides of young cattle, typically under six months to a year old.
They are highly regarded for their exceptionally fine grain, soft, supple feel, and durability, making them ideal for crafting elegant, comfortable, and long-lasting shoes and boots.
Key Characteristics:
- Suppleness & Feel: Calfskin is exceptionally soft, pliable, and lightweight compared to adult cowhide, allowing it to mould to the shape of the foot for a comfortable fit.
- Fine Grain: The fibres are densely packed, creating a smooth surface with pores that are barely detectable to the eye, resulting in a luxurious, polished look.
- Durability: Despite being soft, fine calf leather is strong and resistant to wear, making it suitable for both daily wear and formal occasions.
- Patina Development: High-quality, full-grain calf leather ages beautifully, developing a unique, rich patina over time.
