A closely directed learning experience where students can focus on applying the techniques and skills necessary to design and make one pair of shoes.

We appreciate that every student is different and tuition is guided to suit your skill level.

ABOUT THE COURSE

The 5-day course is designed for the beginner student (no experience necessary) who wants to experience every facet of the shoemaking process. Students are expected to research at least 3 styles of shoes/boots they would like to make. One of these shoe styles or designs will become their project to make on the course. Upon completion of the study, the student will have made and designed one pair of shoes.

COURSE ACTIVITIES

Pattern-making / Design

A pattern is made on the Last (i.e. the foot model). This design is drawn on the last and then transferred to a cardboard pattern. A test of this pattern will be made from scrap leather to ensure fit and design. This is called a “Pullover” or test shoe. The pullover is assessed and tweaked for fit and style. A pattern is then made which represents the design and appropriate measurements.

Cutting / Clicking

The Leather. Choosing your leather and cutting the pattern pieces.

Upper Stitching

All the pieces that comprise the upper part of the shoe are skived,
folded and stitched together to create your upper.

Lasting / Making

Is the process where the stitched upper is pulled over the Last and fastened to the insole.
Once the upper is attached and the stiffeners are inserted and set, the sole and heel are attached.

Finishing

This is where the sole and heel are trimmed, the edge waxed and the sole is stitched ready for wear.

Shoes made by students are for them to keep and wear.
